Creative Crossroads featuring Pete Erlandson
Since my visits to songwriting rounds have become more frequent, there are times where voices, chord progressions, and the common themes of Jack, Jim, and bourbon blend together. I cannot say the same of my next featured songwriter. Pete Erlandson has a rasp and soul that weaves through his haunting melodies. For me, he always makes me feel like it's fall weather and I'm in the quiet just watching leaves fall.

What first inspired Pete to write his own songs and stop singing others? "I started dreaming songs I never heard before. I heard full band songs like they were being played on the radio." Where does Pete get his best song ideas from? "Mostly just strumming or finger-picking chords until some phrases start to fit in."
One of my favorite songs to hear Pete sing is surprisingly one of Pete's favorites that he has written. ""Sunday Morning" I was 2 verses in before I realized it was about my own redemption." Learning and growing through our writing is such a cathartic process. Pete learned when co-writing his song "Coal Creek Mine" with David Easterling. "Research played a huge part in this song."
When I asked Pete about a lyric that gave him chills, he said ""A Man Is Made" The prosody of this song just came together perfectly for me." Who has influenced Pete as a songwriter? "John Prine, keep it simple and have something to say."
If you are an experienced songwriter or just getting into the habit of writing hooks in a hook book here are some tips and tricks from Pete Erlandson.
What comes first for you: a lyric, melody, feeling, or title?
All of the above. I keep my antenna up all the time.
Do you have any songwriting rituals that help you create?
Quiet room with my guitar usually helps.
What's one practical songwriting tip that you can give our readers?
Read everything. It's not about you; it's about your songs. Sing it like it's the most important thing your listeners will hear that day. Don't be afraid of work, because it's going to take a lot of it.
What's up next for Pete Erlandson?
